New Waste Ban in Effect November 1, 2022.
Effective November 1, 2022, mattresses, box springs and textiles can no longer be disposed of in landfills, transfer stations or waste to energy facilities in Massachusetts. These items must be properly disposed of at facilities that promote their recycling. Fortunately, Norwood has had these facilities in place for many years so, the recycling of these items remains simple.

Mattresses and Box Springs
If you are getting a new mattress and box spring, please take advantage of the retailer removing and recycling the old mattress and box spring for you. You can also bring your old mattress and box spring to the Winter Street Recycling Facility on Saturdays between 8:00 am and 1:30 pm. Maximum 3 items per week and a residential sticker is required for entrance. Please make sure the mattress and box springs are dry, clean and not infested with bugs. If they are not dry, clean or free of bugs, they will be rejected.
The mattresses and box springs are then taken to a facility that remove and separate the fabric, wood and metal springs for reuse.

Textiles
Textiles are clothes, shoes, belts, linens, towels, curtains, cloth accessories, etc. Textiles should never go in the recycling cart and now are not allowed to be put into your trash cart (unless they are moldy or contaminated - then they can go in the trash).
If you have items that are reusable, consider donating them to a local thrift store. Otherwise, take advantage of the 10 convenient textile drop off boxes throughout Town. There is a textile box at every school and at the Winter Street Recycling Facility.
These textile boxes take "the good, bad, and the ugly". Just make sure they are dry and clean. If you have a ripped shirt, they'll take it. If you have only one shoe, they'll take it. Go to the Trash and Recycling web page and click on Recycling Textiles tab for more info.

Food Composting Programs

The Town of Norwood has a drop-off Residential Food Scrap Program in place. Please follow the link to get more information.

Additionally, if you want your food compost picked up and hauled away, the town is currently offering a pilot curbside compost service with Black Earth Compost. The pilot will begin on May 1, 2024.

Hydrant Flushing 

Hydrants provide a direct connection with the public water system.
The Water Division's Hydrant Flushing Program is conducted twice a year, in the Spring and early Fall. .

Hydrant flushing is a recommendation of the DEP to:
Clean all pipes in the system and to ensure chlorine residual to the ends of the system.  It is also used to measure flows for fire protection and locate and repair maintenance problems.

What to expect:
It is expected that some discoloration and disturbance of the water in the area of the work will occur while the program is in progress and consumers should check the clarity of their water prior to use. In the event that rust or sediment is present, wait approximately 2 hours for any disturbance that was caused by the flushing to settle and run the cold water faucet nearest the water meter until clear. DO NOT RUN THE HOT WATER UNTIL THE COLD WATER IS CLEAR.

The Norwood Department of Public Works is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Town's infrastructure of streets, sidewalks, sanitary sewers, storm drains, public shade trees, miscellaneous town owned buildings and land, various components of the town's motor fleet. DPW is also responsible for Highland Cemetery.
